Routing

Introduction

It is a process in which administrator and routing protocols (OSPF, RIP,  IGRP, EIGRP Etc) find out the best route/path for destination routers and store in routing table.

Routing table have the best route/path of the destination routers. 

Routing

  1. Static Routing. (administrator assign the route.)
  2. Dynamic Routing. (Protocols are used to find out the best route.)
  3. Default Routing. (Used to communicte between two ISP.)

Routing Protocols

RIP - Routing Information Protocol.

  • It is a distance-vector routing protocol.
  • It broadcast routing table in 30 secs.
  • It doesn't support autonomus system.
  • It doesn't support area.
  • It doesn't support VLSM and CIDR.
  • Administrative distance is 120.
  • Metric value=next-hop.(It is a calculation method to find out for destination)
  • Maximum Hop count 15.

RIP-2 

  • It is a distance-vector routing protocol.
  • It broadcast routing table in 30 secs.
  • It support autonomus system.
  • It doesn't support area.
  • It support VLSM and CIDR.
  • Administrative distance is 120.
  • Metric value=next-hop.(It is a calculation method to find out for destination)
  • Maximum Hop count 15.


IGRP - Interior Gateway Routing Protocol.

  • It is a CISCO proprietary protocol which support CISCO product.
  • It broadcast routing table.
  • It doesn't support VLSM and CIDR.
  • It support autonomus system.
  • Administrative distance 100.
  • Metric value=Bandwith-Delay.
  • Maximum Hop count by default 100(Can support 255).
  • Dosen't support area.

EIGRP - Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol.

  • It is a Hybrid routing protocol.
  • It multicast routing table.
  • It support VLSM and CIDR.
  • It support autonomus system.
  • Administrative distance 90.
  • Metric value=Bandwith-Delay.
  • Maximum Hop count by default 100(Can support 255).
  • Dosen't support area.

 

OSPF - Open Shortest Path First.

  • It use SPF algorithm to find out the best route for destination routers.
  • It is a link state routing protocol.
  • Support VLSM and CIDR.
  • Support AS.
  • Support area.
  • Administrative distance 110.
  • Matric value=cost.
  • Multicast routing table.
